Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, also known as natural hormone therapy, by definition is therapy using hormones that are identical on a molecular level with the endogenous hormones in your body. Such hormones include estrogen, progesterone, DHEA, and testosterone. These hormones are used to treat menopause, andropause, osteoporosis, depression, anxiety, insomnia, and fatigue. BHRT can be considered as an alternative medicine when treating these conditions.
Dr. Ali practices BHRT judiciously by checking the hormone levels on a regular basis and watching for any side effects. He prefers BHRT because he believes it to be safer than synthetic hormones. He believes that synthetic hormones produce more toxic metabolites and can cause various side effects compared to BHRT. However BHRT is not 100% safe and may have similar side effects as nonbioidentical hormones, according to the Food and Drug Administration. Various regulatory bodies like the FDA have released statements that there is a lack of evidence that the benefits and risks of bioidentical hormones are different from well-studied nonbioidentical hormones. Nonetheless, we have been using BHRT for years and have seen great results with our patients. BHRT is not for every patient. Each patient will be thoroughly checked before BHRT may be recommended or prescribed.
